Yes, it is alternative approach for solving logical problems. Generally, both of the techniques are used to solve logical problems. 

But question was particularly about "medical expert system". I think you didn't read this part of the article.

The best approach for these systems is to use fuzzy logic techniques to sort through the maze of messy data, much as people often have to do.
